General Description

Senior position which performs semi-skilled manual labor in connection with general maintenance and upkeep of park grounds, facilities, and buildings. Performs routine duties under limited supervision often times interacting with the public.

Essential Job Functions

Operates and assists with maintaining light-duty construction/maintenance equipment required in the performance of duties.

Cleans, mows, edges, trims, and generally maintains grounds, recreation areas, and athletic fields. Plants, prunes, and trims bushes, shrubs, and trees. Places and removes sod and other landscape materials. Assists with watering, spraying, and fertilizing. Lays out, drags and conditions, stripes, and prepares athletic fields for use.

Cleans and performs various custodial duties within buildings and facilities, including emptying trash, cleaning restrooms, stripping and waxing floors. Assists with basic building maintenance such as painting, repairing doors, changing A/C air filters and light bulbs. Assists with monitoring and maintaining operating supplies.

Emphasis for this specific position is on public relations, including enforcement of rules and regulations, ordinances, and providing information. Will oversee the development of a volunteer base to assist with these responsibilities. Assists with maintaining written records and reports pertaining to daily and weekly activities. Helps keep supervision and administration informed orally and in writing. Must work every weekend. Ability to lift and/or move up to 80 pounds and also push or pull heavy objects. Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of general groundskeeping and building maintenance practices.
  • Ability to train and lead entry level staff.
  • Knowledge of the methods and tools used in these fields.
  • Ability to operate and assist with the maintenance of light-duty construction/maintenance equipment in the performance of duties.
  • Ability to provide and to understand and carry out general oral and written directions and instructions.
  • Ability to deal tactfully with the public.
  • Skill in the use of hand tools utilized in basic construction/maintenance activities.
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 80 pounds and also push or pull heavy objects.

Minimum Requirements

PHYSICAL SKILLS/WORKING CONDITIONS: Ability to lift and/or move up to 80 pounds and also push or pull heavy objects. May use a handling device (dolly, cart, etc.) or work with another team member to lift and/or move excessively heavy objects. Ability to climb, bend, stoop, squat, and walk frequently. Ability to perform manual labor duties outdoors, sometimes under adverse conditions. Ability to communicate effectively using verbal, written and visual communication. Must work every weekend.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma and two (2) years' of experience in general groundskeeping and/or park facility related maintenance required.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS: Must possess a valid Florida driver's license. Certification in First Aid and CPR must be obtained within six (6) months of employment.
